J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek

  • Aug 27, 2010 from stylelist(StyleList) in Lifestyle
stylelist Filed under: Fashion, News, Designers & Brands, ShoppingJ.Crew tumbles into fall with a roughed-up-luxe catalog, arriving in homes this week. Tom Mora, head of J.Crew weddings design, gave StyleList a tour through the season's new looks.

As Jenna Lyons, the new president of J.Crew, previously told StyleList, the autumn collection was conceived as "Edie Beale-goes-to-Girl Scout camp." "Grey Gardens" icon Beale, the subject of a 1975 documentary, a 2006 Broadway musical, and a 2009 HBO biopic, became a cult fashion figure for her quirky, layered outfits.

J.Crew played with the contrasts of glamour and utilitarian style, both in its clothing and the setting of the catalog's opening pages. Mora notes that the collection hinges on "the idea of new classics, rebuilding them and reconstructing them... They're very comfortable looking; they're slouchy. The colors are moody and earthy."

In keeping with the guiding spirit of Beale, Mora underscored the "grandma chic [of layering], with an emphasis on texture. Or think about your grandfather's sweater and layering over that."

Subtle colors, especially various shades of green, are key to this layered style. "The muted colors allow you to layer colors that wouldn't necessarily go together," believes Mora. Moss green, forest green, and a sallow olive bridge the gap between grays, blush pinks, and reddish browns.

J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
J.Crew's September catalog has a dreamy, playful feel, pairing opulent items (like this marabou jacket) with hardworking basics, such as a T-shirt or corduroy pants. More of the company's limited edition, high-end Collection items appear throughout this mailing. "That becomes part of the Edie Beale thing as well: heirloom pieces that feel luxe," explains Mora.
J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
The first section of the catalog sets the opposites-attract tone. Models pose on weathered velvet chairs or rusty, camp-style bedsteads draped with vintage scarves. Here, satin platform heels pair with an asymmetric sweater inspired by motorcycle jackets.
J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
You'll get a glimpse of a whimsical new accessory from the Collection line: a Mongolian lamb purse. The fluffy, pale confection marks the first season that J.Crew has worked with this material.
J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
A new women's denim cut debuts in this catalog: the Downtown Skinny Jean, with a straight, tight leg. These jeans aren't alone in getting slimmed down. Other women's pants and the men's 484 slim-fit cords also got a bit narrower. Since many of the jacket styles became looser and more slouchy, notes Mora, pants were trimmed to give a play of proportion.
J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
J.Crew partnered with milliner Albertus Swanepoel for a smashing statement piece: a wool leopard-print fedora. Mora raved about the textures and juxtapositions in this outfit, although he admits, "we don't feel that people are going to walk down the street wearing the look head to toe." He clarifies, "You take the elements you want when we give ideas of ways to put things together. But who knows, maybe you'll try the shirt with the tie with the necklace!"
J.Crew September Catalog - Sneak Peek
Classic pieces, like a heathered wool toggle cardigan and hand-stitched Quoddy bluchers, exemplify the men's fall line -- but having a long-haired model with a full beard is a first for J.Crew.

Another swelling trend is wearing shorts into fall, either barelegged or over tights. Every variation the models wear, from black wool tuxedo shorts to denim boyfriend shorts, is rolled up to show even more leg. (If this look makes you a bit anxious, check out our summer tips on looking better in shorts.)

A magpie love of shiny things brightens up both the dressy and casual clothes. Sequins sparkle on pencil skirts, cardigans, tees, and harem pants. Even the models' nails have an extra gleam, with a special heat-activated coating that gives a metallic luster.

The shine really kicks in on the pages with the cast of the upcoming film "The Romantics," including Katie Holmes and Josh Duhamel. As we previewed earlier this month, the actresses shimmy in sequins, beads, and embroidered crystals.

Glitter aside, the women's looks still borrow freely from the boys. Oxford shoes, checked shirts, and utility jackets give the feminine frills a tough overlay.

Women have also been ordering directly from the men's pages; the extra-small sizes available in shirts and sweaters make the raiding parties even easier.

    Australia's dark heart

  • Oct 02, 2010 from guardianukfeed in World News
guardianukfeed When an Aboriginal man was killed by five white youths in Alice Springs last year, it was the latest race-hate crime in an area plagued by violence. But the lenient sentences handed down to the "Ute 5" have sparked alarm that there will be a racial backlash in the Australian outbackOne after the other, the photographs of the dead man fall. There is Kwementyaye walking Waffles the dog on the beach; there he is on the platform of Alice Springs station; there he is blowing his birthday candles out, "surrounded by girls," says his fiance, Jade. "And smiling. He was always smiling." And then I see it the saddest picture of all. It's Jade with Kwementyaye just a few weeks before his death. It's shocking to see how different she looked before he died; before she knew the full story of the beating, the racist taunts and the firing of the gun; before all the rage and injustice that was to follow the phone call on that cold Saturday morning last July. The problem with sadness is that it is invisible. I couldn't see it, two hours ago, when I walked into the house that Jade Keil and Kwementyaye Ryder thought they'd spend the rest of their lives in. I couldn't see it as she pottered about making coffee, fussed over her uneaten carrot cake and talked me through the events of his death and the subsequent trial. Of course, misery is detectable only in its works, and I manage to grasp something of the sorrow and bedlam that Jade has been through when I glimpse the old photograph of her. She's slim, 30kg lighter, and her face shows none of the strange damage that bereavement has inflicted the lines beneath her eyes like bruises, the blemishes and whorls like cuts. The phone call came on 26 July last year. It was Kwementyaye's elder brother Darryl. He was sobbing. "Where are you? You don't know, do you? Get round here now. It's my bros. They've found him at the bottom of Anzac Hill. He's dead."The first feeling was no feeling at all. Jade simply put the phone down. She'd met Kwementyaye two and a half years earlier, in Bojangles bar in Alice Springs. She was a relative newcomer to Alice. She was 28 and had travelled all over Australia, but she liked it here and she definitely liked the look of the handsome Alice-born native in the flashy cowboy hat. Protected from shyness by an armour of beer, she walked up and pinched his bum. They got together immediately. They made plans. They would work, save and marry. They would travel to southeast Asia. How can all of that disappear in the space of a phone call? For Jade, it was simply too much to grasp. The last time Therese Ryder saw her son Kwementyaye, he was dancing to country music. He'd just returned from Trephina Gorge, where he worked as a trainee ranger and was singing and clapping to his favourite tunes before a beery night out. The next morning, an old school friend of Kwementyaye's knocked on the door. Therese laughed when she saw him he was dressed as a policeman."Why are you dressed like that?" she said."I'm a police officer now, Mrs Ryder."When he told her why he'd come, she screamed. It was the sight of Therese and her family, sitting on the floor wailing and crying, that finally triggered Jade's tears. But there was mystery, too. How did Kwementyaye come to have abrasions and swelling on his face, arms, forehead and leg and a 3cm laceration on the back of his head? He wasn't the violent kind. He'd never been in trouble with the police. Perhaps, they thought, he'd been in a car crash. Soon, the police came with darker news: they believed Kwementyaye had been murdered. In the streets and pubs and dusty camps of Alice Springs there were whispers and dread and fury; some heard rumours of white men fleeing the scene; others warned of riot and revenge. Bloody memories began to rouse themselves from the floor of the town's collective conscious. Worried, the police announced that race was not a motive in the crime. When reporters asked how they could know this when they didn't have any suspects, they replied: "That's just what we're saying."On the morning of Kwementyaye's death, local artist Matty Day saw something horrific. He was walking his dogs by the Todd river a wide, dry, sandy bed that runs through the centre of town on which, for generations, indigenous people have camped out on when a white 4WD Toyota Hilux drove at high speed at a group of Aboriginal people."I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he tells me when we meet in a coffee shop. "There was one old guy who was struggling. If he hadn't got up he would've been run over. It was like they were driving at a flock of birds like they were little animals that could be disposed of. The respect for life was just not there.""Was there a lot of space around the group?" I ask. "They were definitely aiming for them?""Yeah, there was the whole river," he says.Concerned, Matty approached the group and saw Kwementyaye, who told him the car had already tried to run over a couple of elderly people further down the river. Customer ReviewsGreat ProductThis was purcheased for my grandchildren, all boys, aged 14-20 years. They love this stool because they use it for their Rockband drum and guitar games which they enjoy playing together. This stool is sturdy and was a great buy. Well made.Fine for kids; definitely not for adults (or at least not full-size men)As others have mentioned, this stool is only , so no one should expect the same quality as a true drum stool one would purchase from a bona fide music shop. However, the manufacturers should make it clear that this stool is designed for little ones, not for grown men. Perhaps they don't think grown men are or should be playing video games! No matter how tightly I tightened the nut that holds the legs up, the legs would collapse out (thereby sinking the stool down) when I sat on it. The cushioning is flimsy and completely compresses, so I end up essentially sitting on a hard plastic plate. I should mention here that I am a big guy, but not overweight. I am 6'3" and weigh about 215. For me, this stool is useless. I'm sure it would be fine for someone weighing 100 lbs. or less.Ok throneThe throne is ok. I expected more padding in the seat for the price. It is fairly comfortable, yet not luxurious. Height adjustment is a little cumbersome, but ok.Perfect for RockBand on the go.Every year my friends and I take a train up the west coast from LA to Seattle for the Penny Arcade Expo. One thing we do to pass the time on this 34 hour trip is set up RockBand in the arcade car. Previous years had us sitting on someone's luggage, to varying success. This year some one brought along the Rock Throne Drum Stool. It fit easily into his carry on luggage and it did the trick nicely. I understand that he also used it in his hotel room.Makes Rockin out more fun!Great stool! Didn't expect it to look as professional. We feel like real drummers now!

    NIce warmth & support

These tights have proven to be relatively warm and provide good support on runs in cold weather (25-35 degrees F). The tights fit snugly (as stated in other reviews I read before purchasing) but function as expected. The tighter fit does support leg muscles better than normal tights would. I am satisfied so far with performance given the $60 I paid for the product. 4/5 Brian Healy "healz71" (MA, USA) - See all my reviews, December 10, 2009

    Great Product

Honestly, I was nervous about buying these at first. I got them pretty quickly and realized that do live up to their name.I live in Michigan, and while running in the cold in Winter I was cool, not cold. I had outer pants on, but still was warm enough and had support that was promised by these tights. Also, I wore these around the house afterwards in 70 degrees and can tell that these will keep you cool in the Summer. Overall, I am glad I spent the money on these tights instead of something a bit cheaper.Eventually will try the higher priced models, but right now these tights work for what I need, running small distances of less than ten miles. Good luck, I liked them. 5/5 Bill - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I like the tights and the feel. I was initially concerned about them being too warm but I am very content, they feel very fresh even when running at high intensity. The only complaint I have of the product is that the compression is loss at a rapid rate. After only a couple of weeks I already feel them less compressive than when I first wore them.Over all it is a good running tight, but a not very lasting compression. 4/5 JDA - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Helped newbie runner avoid aggravating groin injury

I am a newbie runner, having taken it up a little less than a year ago. I've been training for a half marathon in February and have had a nagging soreness in my upper thigh, which I've been told is a groin strain. I had been running in typical shorts with no compression. Rather than "push through it," I decided to take a week and a half off of running during the holidays in order to let the injury heal. I had been researching the use of compression shorts and thought I'd give these a try to see if they'd reduce muscle fatigue and reduce the aggravation of my groin strain.I've been using these for about a month now and believe they've really helped. While my groin strain hasn't gone away completely, I feel it especially after long runs, I do feel better support when I run. I went with these 3/4 tights, rather than full tights, primarily because I live in San Diego, it doesn't get all that cold here, and I get easily overheated. The only downside I've... 4/5 Jeffrey Tidwell "tidwell100" (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews, January 16, 2011

    Great support, decrease muscle fatigue

First pair of these I've owned, but after using them, I'll be getting the full length version as well for colder weather runs. I've noticed a marked increase in knee support and a decrease in muscle fatigue using them. As a triathlete, it's very nice being able to decrease recovery time between training types. I've used them in weather ranging from 55 degrees to 75 degrees and felt comfortable in both (though the 75 degree run was getting a bit warm). They do make a short version which would still have muscle support losing only the knee support. I recommend. 5/5 M. Mohler (Northwest Arkansas) - See all my reviews, June 3, 2009

    fine product

I prefer Orca and Skins over CW-X when it comes to compression shorts. The options for a 3/4 compression apparel for men are limited. I tried it so far a couple of times and it feels great. Great pants!

I use these pants for cycling, running, and underneath my slacks on my walk to and from work in Downtown Chicago. I am never cold. I can still run/bike outside down to about 10-15 degrees and feel warm. I love the fact that I wear them 10-15 minutes after a run/cycling and the interlaced fibers actually hold the blood in my muscle and allow the muscles to relax at a much more normal pace. better than expected!

I am not a running expert but wanted some tights essentially for warmth this winter. I was amazed at how much better my legs felt after running in these versus just wearing shorts or pants. My legs were not as tired after running which has allowed me to increase my distance. I was sceptical about compression wear at first but now am a believer! 5/5 James Gregory "James Gregory" - See all my reviews, November 27, 2009

    Worth the money.

I bought these mostly as a skin layer for mountaineering and secondly for running on cold days.At first I thought they might also be a tad too tight (I got a M and I am a 31 waist 30 length). I was wondering if I could put up with them for more than 8 hours. Had them on for about 36 hours straight under snow pants and fleece pants and they did not actually bother me at all. They did their job pretty damn well. Maybe they just needed to stretch a little.I read others say, they ankles are tight. They are. Although mine have loosened up noticeably. Luckily they never made the dreaded pop of torn threads. Just be careful before they've been worn a lot.In terms of the 'support' thing. I think it is mostly a bunch of BS. I didn't buy them to keep my body together, bought them to rid moisture and give a little insulation. If you're complaining about knee support and a avid runner, I suggest cycling. I am hard pressed to believe a little stretchy fabric... 4/5 Kyle N - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
