How I Didn't Get Killed At E3 [Column]

  • Jun 29, 2010 from kotaku(Kotaku) in Gaming
kotaku How did I get to E3? How did I get a VIP pass? I don't even know. The idea was that I would walk up to E3 and, telling nobody anything, manage to just get in. That's what happened.
    It worked out pretty well.
I have business in the San Francisco Bay Area from late June to early August, so I figured I would fly in from Tokyo a week early, and check out E3. At the time, I didn't think it was a stupid idea to fly in to San Francisco International Airport, despite the Electronic Entertainment Expo being in Los Angeles. When I booked my ticket, I was only thinking that it would cost a lot more money to fly into Los Angeles from Tokyo and then fly back from San Francisco. I was hardly thinking that the entire goal of my trip to the United States was to make money so much money that a little bit here or there to upgrade my traveling comfort would be irrelevant in the Grand Scheme of Things. Halfway through the flight, I remembered the story of Miyamoto Musashi's duel with Sasaki Kojiro: Musashi said that Kojiro had lost the duel in the very first instant, when he cast his scabbard into the ocean.
    Monday
Well, at least, flying into San Francisco meant I would get to enjoy something I seldom enjoy: a nice long drive in a genuinely scenic part of the world. The road from San Francisco to Los Angeles, whichever highway you choose, offers much more fantastic scenery in five hours than you're bound to experience locked up in your room staring at a computer screen for six weeks. I arrived at the airport, suffered through a long ordeal at immigration why they leave only six booths of eighteen open when there are clearly a thousand passengers waiting is beyond me and waited outside in the cool northern California breeze for twenty minutes before Bob's Chrysler Sebring ("When You Need a Convertible right now") slid up into a perfectly parallel-parked position. It was around that instant that I realized two attractive ladies were whispering about me over by an ashtray: Aha, it's because I am wearing a super-fly Adidas Originals track suit in the Japan-exclusive color of psycho-crayon-green. In front of me, a luggage cart, containing an enormous suitcase, my laptop bag, and a cardboard box full of computer. In my right hand, an Adidas Originals shopping bag containing an Adidas Originals track suit in the Japan-exclusive color of shiny piano black.
I'd heard someone say, a long time ago, that if you want people to remember you, you have to wear the same thing every day. That's why people remember, say, Mickey Mouse, or Super Mario. I've earned something of an . . . existing reputation as the guy with a Swedish schoolgirl haircut and ridiculous cartoon character glasses with twenty-four-karat gold studs in them. It was time to complete the look. I wasn't sure if green was the right color, though it was the gaudiest, weirdest color that the Shinjuku Adidas Originals store had this season, so I rolled with it.

Despite my engorged interest in the National Basketball Association, it wasn't until I'd landed in San Francisco and picked up a discarded copy of the New York Times that it dawned on me: The Los Angeles Lakers were facing the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals in Los Angeles. At the Staples Center. Next door to the Los Angeles Convention Center. Where the Electronic Entertainment Expo was held. Crayon-green was the Boston Celtics' primary color. Oh man. This situation was bound to get gorgeous real quick.
Days later, following the Lakers' victory, minutes after a man threw a lit cigarette into the open Sebring, burning a hole halfway into the nylon of my track pants right up above the knee, moments before a dozen rioters grabbed our car and tried maybe-seriously to tip it over, our car drifted to a stop in front of Cheapassgamer.com's own Cheapy D and Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who took one look at my pants, told me I'd better take them off, and warned me, "You're gonna get fuckin' stabbed."
I didn't get fuckin' stabbed, though the possibility of it occurred to me in that breezeway as Bob popped the trunk on Monday morning. We stuffed my stuff into the car; I took the shopping bag into the front seat.
"We need to maximize our visibility," I told Bob. "In a couple years, we're going to have enough money to rent a booth. We need to think about that. This year, we don't have a booth this year, we are a walking, talking booth."
    "Okay."
Maybe Bob was tired. We pulled off the highway and into the first shopping center outside the airport. Lo and behold: a Chipotle.

The sun was terrifying. Just to fight a migraine, I had to squint so hard that I could barely see. I had to squint so hard I could have looked right at an eclipse. I grimaced in a Walgreens parking lot while Bob went in to get cash and cigarettes. Hands on my hips. I unzipped my jacket, and there I was in a Russian Tuxedo: track suit and tank-top. A couple of college girls looked at me. It struck me, instantly, that I was probably a huge joke to...

    My velocity demon

  • Sep 19, 2010 from VivRaper in *
VivRaper Ive been reading Inside the Writers Mind: Writing Narrative Journalism and fancied trying to write some American-style creative nonfiction. So this blogpostisnt about geoscience. Instead, its about Well, youll see.
Like UK Prime Minister David Cameron, I have a personal trainer. Hes everything a gym god should be toned, muscular, well-hung and relentless when he puts me through my paces. Ive begged him to stop many times when weve been out jogging together, but hes pitiless. And I cant just collapse to my knees because were roped together.
A fortnight ago, we entered a race on the recreation ground next to the London Olympics site and won. He was ultra-competitive that day, sprinting ahead to pull level with the competition. With a gleam in his eye and a cocky grin, hed glance to the side before flying off around a bend. I had no choice but to lumber behind him, gasping. The air on Hackney Marshes seemed as thin and gritty as a mountain top that Saturday, leaving my chest raw and my voice croaky for hours afterwards.
In the park where we train, the ground isnt as flat as the recreation ground. The rope often tangles us and I have to stick my hands between his firm, bulging thighs to unravel it. He doesnt mind hes a real one for the girls. Well often take a detour when a golden-haired lady shimmies by. But hes probably not alone. Many straight guys doubtless see exercising outside with sweaty women a perk of the job.
One thing thats definitely different from every celebrity personal trainer though. Mine is only a year old. Hes not human either. But Im not going to hold it against him. Velocity demon, speedy spaniel, hard racing spaniel, dogasus: whatever you call him, hes a womans best running companion.
When we pound almost out of control down hills and leap over tussocks of ground, were free. Theres nothing more fiercely life affirming than the joy of a working spaniel running. With a bungee cord around my waist attached to his harness, Im a Roman charioteer riding into battle or a dog sledder racing to the Poles under the wide midnight sun. The only thing were missing is wheels.
A spanielszest and bounce settled our choice on the breed. Wed wanted a dog small enough for a tiny terraced house, but energetic enough to take on long hikes. We heard nightmare stories about large, energetic dogs that sat down on multi-day cross-country walks and had to be carried for miles. Small dogs are light, but we hoped we wouldnt have to lug one around.
An internet dog selector suggested Cavalier King Charles spaniels, but a vet friend wasnt in favour. They fall apart at five years old, she told us. Then we watched BBC TV documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed about dog inbreeding and health problems. The programme showeda Cavalier King Charles fitting and howling in pain. My husband cried. We couldnt face that in our little living room.
Our vet friend recommended designer crossbreeds and working dogs. We decided to go for both at once. One Saturday, we set off on a three-hour expedition to a farmhouse in eastern England. Without a car, we walked two hours from the station along busy roads and across fields.
I fretted the whole way that faced by barking dogs I would flee. What an embarrassment! A prospective dog owner sees a dog and runs away. Id been terrified of dogs all my life, reduced to mindless terror by a single bark. Walking holidays were rendered a nightmare by the mile-longdetours to avoid a sheepdog behind a fence. My vet friend said getting a dog would neutralise my fear.
In the farmhouse, two Cocker spaniel/Poodle crosses bred from hunting spaniels. They were cute and inoffensive. I petted them. The breeder told us she was going to breed more Cockerpoos from the working Cocker spaniels in kennels at the back of the house. Would we like to see them?
There were nine Cocker spaniels caged up all untrained and utterly wild. Upon seeing us, they leapt about madly in their five cages like canine gazelles. Happily unaware of my dog phobia, the woman opened the cages in quick succession. The spaniels surged out a churning tide of fur, a force of nature unleashed.
All nine wanted to say hello and they were in-your-face about it literally. They sprung to head height, twisting gracefully in the air like ballerinas as they returned to Earth. Working Cocker spaniels are a breed apart from their long-haired, long-eared cousins designed for the show ring and the sofa. Theyre sleek hunting dogs bred for efficiently flushing and retrieving game.
I stood my ground. Amazingly, I was unafraid. The trigger for my terror was barking or growling the spaniels did neither. They were sleek, silent and stunning. More than that, they exulted in the sheer fact of being alive and free to run. They were cheetahs, Mount Everest and rollercoasters bound up in a domestic dog. Tired commuters, cramped tube journeys, computer failures all were swept away by the unalloyed joy of the spaniel.
My husband and I left. The woman planned to...

WHY IS CRICKET NOT A DISCIPLINE IN THE OLYMPICS?
Cricket was played just once, at the Paris Olympics in 1900. Cricket is played by just 10 countries at the highest level (though there are nearly 100 associate members of the ICC) and this would normally disqualify it from being included as an Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee claims mass participation is a must (minimum of 16 nations). The only other occasion cricket was part of a multi-disciplinary meet was at the 1998 Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur.
WHEN WERE COLOURED UNIFORMS INTRODUCED IN ODIS?
Coloured uniforms for ODIs were introduced in 1977 by Kerry Packer for the World Series matches in Australia which did not have official status, even though many world class cricketers took part. However, it was a revolution in itself. Its legacy is a permanent change in the way the game is funded, watched, played and perceived. World Series pioneered three-cornered tournaments, night cricket, floodlights, coloured clothing, coloured balls, drop-in pitches, on-field microphones and multitudinous
WHO HOLDS THE RECORD FOR WINNING THE MOST NUMBER OF OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS FOR SWIMMING?
In the 1972 Munich Olympic games, Mark Spitz won seven Olympic gold medals, a feat yet unequalled by any other Olympic athlete. Even more remarkably, Spitz set a new world record in each of the seven events the 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle, 100 m butterfly, 200 m butterfly, 4 x 100 m freestyle, 4 x 200 m freestyle and the 4 x 100 m medley
IN CRICKET, WHAT IS POWER PLAY?
The original rules of ODIs stated that during the first 15 overs, only two fielders should be allowed outside a 30-metre circle around the wicket. This meant that attacking batsman were likely to score runs quickly in the first 15 overs, but would become more watchful at the end of the spell. In an effort to keep the game more exciting during the middle overs, the 15 over block with fielding restrictions at the beginning of the innings is reduced to 10, and thereafter, the captain of the fielding side has to decide when to bring his fielders in again for two further blocks of 5 overs, at any time he likes. These 5 over spells are called Powerplay 2 and Powerplay 3. (Powerplay 1 is the first block of 10).
WHAT IS THE MILEAGE OF F1 CARS?
For every 100 kilometres, a 900 bph F1 car uses 70 litres of petrol. A team uses about 1,200 litres of petrol during a Grand Prix weekend.
WHY IS THE SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKET TEAM CALLED PROTEAS?
The Protea flower with pink and yellow petals, is the national flower of South Africa, and hence their cricket team is called proteas. Similarly, South Africas rugby team is called springboks, which is the countrys national animal.
HAS ANY PLAYER IN CRICKET BEEN DECLARED OUT BECAUSE HE CAME LATE TO THE GROUND TO BAT?
Law 31 in cricket provides that an incoming batsman must be in position to take guard or for his partner to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the fall of the previous wicket. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batsman will be declared timed out. The fielding side has to appeal for the wicket to be awarded. There is no known incidence of this in an international match. There are three cases, however, in first class cricket. H Yadav Tripura vs Orissa at Cuttack in 1997; Vasbert Drakes Border vs Free State at East London in 2002 and A J Harris Nottinghamshire vs Durham UCCE at Nottingham in 2003.

October 1964

Creator: David Halberstam | Sports & Recreation - 1995-04-11

An acclaimed chronicle of the World Series in a seminal year finds the Yankees and Cardinals facing off as America confronts its feelings about race. From the author of Summer of '49. Reprint.

Publisher: Ballantine Books

About this book
In 1989 David Halberstam published "Summer of '49," which became a #1 "New York Times" bestseller. It was a compelling portrait of baseball in an America as yet unchanged by affluence, technology, and social progress. The players, almost all white, had been raised in harsh circumstances, the games were played in the afternoon on grass and were broadcast on radio, the teams traveled by train, and the owners had dictatorial power over the players. Here also was the story of the Yankees winning the first of their pennants under Casey Stengel before going on to become baseball's greatest dynasty. "October 1964" is Halberstam's exciting new book about baseball -- this time about the last season of that Yankee dynasty. Like the previous book, it is both sports and history, and it is a fascinating account of an electrifying baseball championship against the background of profound social change. The Yankees, like most American League teams, reflected the status quo and, in contrast to the National League teams, had been slow to sign the new great black players (indeed, for a time, their best scouts were ordered not to sign them). Though the Yankees boasted such great names as Mantle, Maris, and Ford, theirs was an aging team: Mantle, hobbled by injuries, was facing his last hurrah in post-season play. By contrast, the St. Louis Cardinals were a young tough team on the ascent, featuring talented black players -- Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, Lou Brock, and Bill White -- who were changing the very nature of the game with their unprecedented speed and power. Halberstam has once again given us an absorbing tale of an exciting season and a great Word Series that reflected a changing era in bothbaseball and the rest of society as well: The fabric that insulated baseball from the turmoil in the rest of the country was beginning to tear. We get intimate vignettes not only of the players but also of the scouts who signed them including the black scouts who had been denied the chance.
