5 Rocket Plays for September

  BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- The Labor Day market holiday provided traders with a break in momentum yesterday, cooling the volatility that had been tossing the stock market around in recent months. Indeed, the VIX Index, a measure of volatility, is down considerably since the beginning of September, a sign that stocks might start to stabilize as fall approaches. As expected, the economy continues to be a driver of share prices right now. While economic data held the market's head under water for much of the last month, some positive indications suggest that we could be due for a turnaround this month. One of those was the barrage of high profile M&A activity that popped up over the last few weeks. That level of corporate buying is predicated on the corporate view that market valuations are cheap right now. Likewise, with improvements seen in last week's housing and jobs numbers, retail investors are becoming increasingly willing to part with "safety" investments such as gold and treasuries and get back into stocks. We'll do our part too, hoping to uncover some intraweek gains with the latest group of Rocket Stocks plays. For the uninitiated, Rocket Stocks are our weekly list of companies with short-term gain catalysts and longer-term growth potential. In the last 59 weeks, Rocket Stocks have outperformed the S&P 500 by 58.39%. Here's this week's list of Rocket Stocks to watch. First up this week is mid-cap apparel company Phillips-Van Heusen. Despite the challenges faced by the apparel business, Phillips-Van Heusen has stood out as a winner in the category, and its share price has risen in kind. Year-to-date, shares of the company are up more than 25%. But that's still a far cry from the nearly 60% gains investors were sitting on as of April. Here's why investors still have upside in this stock in 2010. Once known for its dress shirt business, Phillips-Van Heusen has grown to become a well-diversified apparel firm with a deep portfolio of brands, including Calvin Klein, IZOD and, most recently, Tommy Hilfiger. Those brands are sold at more than 17,000 stores, of which 650 are company-owned retail locations. By focusing most of its branding on an adult demographic, Phillips-Van Heusen benefits from stickier, more-affluent and less-fickle customers. That niche has helped the company secure top-line growth averaging more than 10% over the trailing five years. While the $3 billion acquisition of Tommy Hilfiger earlier this year was a major financial undertaking (one that depleted quite a bit of cash, added debt, and diluted shares), the net effect should be a major boon to Phillips-Van Heusen. Investors might get a glimpse of that positive impact later today when the company announces its second quarter numbers.

  One of the big M&A moves this year has been the majority stake in eye care giant Alcon taken on by pharmaceutical giant Novartis. The latter announced in late August that it had acquired a 77% stake in Alcon, enough to warrant fully consolidating Alcon's financials into Novartis' books. Meanwhile, negotiations continue as the company tries to vie for the remaining minority interest in the Alcon. Some believe that a better deal is ahead for Alcon's current shareholders. For that reason, the company has become a target for merger arbitrageurs, and hedge funds have been purchasing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Alcon shares in recent weeks. As a leader in eye care therapies, Alcon offers substantial advantages for a pharmaceutical firm such as Novartis -- and the company's not likely willing to share its attractive pipeline with minority stakeholders. With equity prices edging up in the last week, a final offer may come sooner rather than later as Novartis tries to rein in Alcon's valuation ahead of completing the acquisition. Alcon's current premium over the Novartis offer reflects that. We're betting on better prices this week.

  MetLife has offered some impressive performance in 2010. The insurer is up more than 17% this year after getting pummeled alongside the rest of its industry back in 2008. As the largest life insurer in the U.S., the company benefits from significant scale advantages over smaller competitors and large cross-selling opportunities from a diverse financial product offering. Because MetLife's insurance offerings are largely commoditized, the company's exceptional financial health gives it a marked advantage over insurers with riskier investment portfolios. Those advantages have done well for the firm, which boasted 10.8% net margins during the second quarter of this year. Efficiency and expansion are the two keys to growth for MetLife.   How do you feel?
  I entered the Banana Republic in my usual attire, leggings, tunic and a terrific pair of strappy wedges. I didn't realize how frumpy I looked until I tried on the classic trench hanging in the misses section of Banana Republic. As soon as I slipped it on, I was transformed into a sophisticated woman. I no longer looked like a hurried mom. I felt fantastic in this trench.
  
  How is the fit?
  I tried on the small. I am usually a 6. It molded to my body perfectly. I would probably size up to a M, if I planned on wearing a lot of sweaters this fall or winter. I was able to move my arms freely without the slightest tug. Most trenches I've tried seem to pull a bit when I stretch my arms, but not this one.
  
  How is the fabric?
  I love the fact that the inside is lined, with a silk striped lining, so that I could roll up my sleeves, exposing the lining, to show off my favorite cuff bracelet.
  
  Where would you wear it?
  I could wear this anywhere, which is the fantastic part. It goes from night to day and from season to season. It goes great with jeans, a pencil skirt, even my little black dress. The price at $198 is reasonable for something that I would plan to wear almost daily and Banana runs sales constantly which is a bonus, if you can grab it at a sale price.
  
  How would you accessorize it?
  I also loved the fact that even a very simple outfit legging outfit underneath, I looked like I was dashing off to run my own company. I tried it on with Banana's" Bliss" sunglasses and loved the whole Hollywood feel that it gave me. I also paired it with one of their new floppy felt hats for fall. I felt like I was taking a walk down the streets of Paris in this ensemble. It changed me from ordinary mom of 6 to a woman who felt sexy and chic.
  
  Would you buy it?
  I would definitely buy this trench because of that reason. I could have any old thing underneath, and still look like the woman I feel like inside, just by slipping it on. I was true to my word, too, I bought it in black!

  How is the fit?
  It doesn't fit well and makes me feel self-conscious. The sleeves fit fine, the rest...not so much. Can't button or belt it. And makes me sad that Banana Republic still doesn't make plus sizes. C'mon! There's money to be made here! Old Navy's doing it and you're part of the same company!
  
  How is the fabric?
  Silky, luxurious, awesome. The garment feels like an instant classic for your wardrobe. Something you'd wear for years.
  
  Where would you wear it?
  Pretty much just here in the store, as it fits right now. If it fit me well, I'd wear this as often as I could. I love fall fashion and this is a classic piece. Tim Gunn would instruct me to buy this, I think.
  
  How would you accessorize it?
  I would wear this with chocolate brown leggings, lace up ankle boots and an animal print dress. Giraffe would be hot! And I'd rock it with a bold red lip - I love camel and red together. Today I wore it with my brown tweed Lane Bryant wide leg pants and my Grace Jones tee by Cut It Out apparel. I accessorized with leopard leather and brass earrings by Peace Images. That's an everyday fall look I would wear.

  If it came in my size, sure. But right now...no.

  How do you feel?
  Unfortunately, I didn't care for how it looked on my body. Khaki just isn't my thing, I am partial to brightly colored outerwear.
  
  How is the fit?
  The slate gray was only available in XS in the store so I had to pass. The medium fit nicely on my size 8 figure, it may be a bit snug if layered over a sweater, but the arm length is perfect for me.
  
  How is the fabric?
  The trench is well-made with all the timeless details, including an extra long removable belt, epaulets and a solid lining with a nice pattern. The fabric is impressive, weightier than I expected with a nice subtle sheen. I tried on the black, checked, and khaki version.
