Historians have dubbed the period from the Civil War to World War I "the age of the university," suggesting that colleges, in contrast to universities, were static institutions out of touch with American society. Bruce Leslie challenges this view by offering compelling evidence for the continued vitality of colleges, using case studies of four representative colleges from the Middle Atlantic region Bucknell, Franklin and Marshall, Princeton, and Swarthmore. A new introduction to this classic reflects on his work in light of recent scholarship, especially that on southern universities, the American college in the international context, the experience of women, and liberal Protestantism's impact on the research university. According to Leslie, nineteenth-century colleges were designed by their founders and supporters to be instruments of ethnic, denominational, and local identity. The four colleges Leslie examines in detail here were representative of these types, each serving a particular religious denomination or lifestyle. Over the course of this period, however, these colleges, like many others, were forced to look beyond traditional sources of financial support, toward wealthy alumni and urban benefactors. This development led to the gradual reorientation of these schools toward an emerging national urban Protestant culture. Colleges that responded to and exploited the new currents prospered. Those that continued to serve cultural distinctiveness and localism risked financial sacrifice. Leslie develops his argument from a close study of faculties, curricula, financial constituencies, student bodies, and campus life. The book will be valuable to those interested in American history, higher education, as well as the particular institutions studied. Its innovative approach should encourage scholars to study colleges and universities as parts of local communities rather than as freestanding entities.     Cooler than Free Run+

    Love, love, love these shoes for running. They are super flexible, lightweight and breathable. I was considering getting the Nike Free Run+ shoes but once I saw and felt the weight of these I was sold on them. I felt that I could more easily run at a faster pace in these shoes. I also noticed that a few more muscles in my legs are being used because of the flexibility.     Nicer shoes than the Nike Free 5.0!!!

    I was also considering the Nike Free 5.0 running shoes but found these to be more comfortable due to the thicker padding and better arch support. Weight/size compared to the two are about the same. It is definitely a more unique looking shoe than the thousands of Nike shoes I see at the gym. I get plenty of complements.     Very surprising shoes

    I took my first run in these shoes and was quite surprised at the comfort and overall feel. At first, I was a little hesitant about the shoes, although I had read great reviews on Amazon. I wasn't sure the shoes would hold up well on asphalt, due to the light construction. Boy, was I wrong, the shoes performed great. I run almost exclusively on city streets. I was really surprised at the comfort and how the shoes give, allowing for your legs and knees to absorb shock and impact rather easily. Great shoes, performs very well. 5/5 S.     Good quality shirt, but sizing is horrible.

    First off, I am 5'6 tall, small body fram but well built around.Pro: Great ventilation. The black part under the arm pits are actually vents that provide great air to cool you off. Shirt fabric doesn't feel sticky when you sweat.Con: Bad sizing! Even the size Small that I ordered, it is EXTREMELY LONG! (maybe because I am 5'6 short) but the shirt hang pass my "crotch", almost look like a dress. The sleeves are long too! They touch the tip of my elbow at normal standing posture. Further more, the sleeves are quite big in diameter. They flap around as run on the treadmill.Overall: Good.     Great shirts for the money

    I just want to say that the Solid Blue/White color is true to size. I am a 6'4" tall guy and have a 36 inch waist, and the large is an adequate fit. There is room in my waist, chest, and the sleeves (they extend almost to my elbows). If anything, it is almost too small. I would have ordered an XL which is what I always wear, but the two prior reviews all mentioned that the sizing is way off on these and that they run really long.     These shoes are definitely good for a nice walk and smooth strides.     I need arch support when running

    So these are one of the two running shoes I bought. For this shoe my color is more like a turquoise. When first putting these stylish shoes on they had lots of support felt comfy and breathable. I hate it went a shoes makes my foot hot.The number one thing I pay attention to is the arch support. I feel that I have a higher then normal arch and I like that support against it when I walk or run. I love the tongue on these shoes! It's connected to the shoes/not separate which makes it easy to put on and it stays in place for the fun. I'm sad to say the second or third time out with them I felt that lack of support and my arch starting bothering me (that pulling feeling). Next day I tried inserts but it didn't really help. I even gave it two weeks thinking maybe it was something I did but the same thing happened on my 6 mile run. The the pain it cause was in the same foot (left) and almost felt better when I ran faster... it was strange.     Not a bad sock, but there are better ones

    These socks were ok. They fit a little tight for a size 12 foot. They are light on top, and cushioned on the bottom.
